New Orleans Class Schedule
Classes are currently held everyday at our school at 2708 Jefferson Hwy. Generally Mondays and Wednesdays the emphasis is on Tai Chi, with Beginners classes starting at 6, and Intermediate classes starting at 7. Tuesdays and Thursdays the emphasis is on Shaolin Kung fu. A detailed schedule is available for download or is available at the bottom of this page. Master Liu comes in to teach class on Fridays, and on the other days a senor student leads class.
The structure of class usually includes a 10 minute warm up (breathing exercises for Tai Chi, and stretch kicks in Kung fu) and then we begin working on whatever the topic of the class is that day. We generally have four main subjects: Basics (Conditioning), Forms, Applications (for self-defense), and Combinations.
Feel free to drop in and attend a class to see how you enjoy it. We recommend that you come a bit early so you can stretch and warm up, and if you are interested in participating please wear loose clothing. If you aren't interested in participating your first class, you can come in and talk with one of our instructors, or on Fridays with our Shifu. Below you will find information on our school's principles and regulations.
Family membership
Once you are enrolled in a regular program, any 2nd family members can enroll for a 25% and 3rd member for 50% discount off regular tuition. We recommend that they start with a three lesson trial program to make the transition to the regular program more comfortable. To get started, please call the office to make an appointment.
The Sash
The students of the Liu Institute International show their progress in the art by the color of the sash they wear. Each color sash is a stop along the way to the ultimate goal of Shaolin pre-discipleship-Golden Black Sash. Requirements for each sash differ little, Kids, Teens and Adults. For Little Kids and Youth we have half of the adults’ requirement sheets available at the school.
Teens and adults may test for their next sash exam during regular class time. This is always done on the last Thursday or Wednesday of the month except for Quarterly Testing. The purpose of this test is to make sure that every student is progressing on schedule.
Your progress starts with your black intro sash. With each progress check you will receive a stripe on you sash. After you receive your 3rd stripe you will test for your next color sash that same month week. The progression toward Golden Black Sash goes like this: Black-White-Yellow-Orange-Green-Blue-Red-Purple-Brown and Golden Black. If for some reason you miss one check or sash exam, please see an instructor to arrange for make up so as to not to delay your progress.
