Mission Statement
The Shaolin, Taiji Kungfu, and Chinese Health-Wellness Programs at the Liu Institute International are designed to bring the best of Chinese philosophy, arts, medicine, and exercise to the West, thereby improving the way of life in the U. S. and all over the world. The main objective is to provide quality health and martial art programs to facilitate personal, mental and spiritual growth and to help people make life-long choices for optimum health and well-being.
To achieve this objective, the Liu Institute International offers a variety of programs:

The youth programs are designed to help improve children’s self-discipline, self-confidence, self-control, and respect, as well as their physical and mental well-being. We help them develop character, acquire mental and physical skills to enable them to help themselves and their community with integrity, and prepare them for their journey in life.
The adult programs are designed to assist each student to improve overall fitness and mental and physical Qi balance, and to empower him/her to channel energy and turn stress into uplifting Qi so as to meet life’s challenges.
Letter from the Editor
The Liu Institute International went through many hurdles and challenges. However, we are resilient, and we see the challenges (such as the natural disaster Katrina) as our testing ground to get us stronger and tougher in both body and mind.
The Liu Institute will have an official Grand Opening on May 27th, 2006. The Liu Institute, New Orleans Grand Opening event will start 10:00 AM, commencing with forms and weapons demonstrations and competitions. The highlight of the event will be starting at 7:00 PM with Shaolin Legacy Show and Shaolin Kickboxing Challenges matches. We would like to invite all interested colleagues, friends and their family members in health-wellness and martial arts to join us in pursuit of a healthy body and a healthy mind.
Peace,
DeRu

The Ranking Sash and Testing
The time and training requirements for promotion are posted on the walls of the training room, and are available in a downloadable format at our website. Many students have asked to have this translated into classroom hours, so this information is supplied below. Please understand that regular attendance is critical for your progression in both internal and external arts. If you miss class, you are encouraged to make up the classes. Additionally, classroom hours are only one ingredient in evaluating a student for progression. All high sash senior students must have enough assistant teaching credits in order to advance. For more information, please ask the staff in the office.
PLEASE NOTE MONTHLY TESTING PROCEDURES: Stripe (progressive testing) will normally be done during class the last full week of the month. Students who are eligible for sash promotion will be notified in advance and will be awarded sashes on the final Thursday of the month, after the demo test.
STUDENTS TO BE PROMOTED MUST BE PRESENT AT 5 P.M. FOR REHEARSAL. DEMO BEGINS AT 6. There are NO regular kids’ or adults’ Kung Fu classes that evening. The demo/ceremony is for kids and adults Kung Fu and Taiji. Sanshou testing begins at 7.
